NEW YORK, NY, NOVEMBER 26, 2025 – Alex Sterling, Founder of Precision Sound Studios has built his business on being a versatile, client-focused engineer with a knack for efficiency and facilitating the sonic needs for every project. Precision Sound’s diverse clientele includes artists such as Cindi Lauper, J Balvin, and Zach Bryan, performers Laurence Fishburne, Jessica Chastain, and Michael J. Fox, and corporate clients such as Netflix, HBO, and Amazon. This breadth of work demonstrates Sterling’s experience, professionalism, and detail-oriented approach to engineering and studio ownership. One element of his methodology in all of these projects is the selection of recording tools that provide him with the critical combination of detail and clarity that is required in recording. After working on project after project, Sterling has found trust in a favored collection of Schoeps microphones that provide him with what he needs for his diverse and demanding work.

A balance of detail and artistry
The secret sauce of Sterling’s approach is how he balances his detail-oriented aesthetic with a strong creative instinct. He is a person that embodies a professional attitude and process of continual improvement, ever striving to achieve a more perfect workflow and optimization of the work of audio engineering. Precision Sound was built prioritizing a carefully designed listening environment and stocked with a producer’s wishlist of select microphones and recording equipment, all in the service of Sterling’s creativity and vision for the studio. “I’ve worked in every corner of the business – live sound, recording, mixing, mastering, and audio restoration – and one thing that links all of them is that you can do your best work when you have a clarity of workflow and trust in your tools that allows you to chase excellence,” he explains. “Precision Sound serves such a wide range of clients and although each gets a bespoke approach, they all benefit from a streamlined production process that favors high quality and an assurance of a professional and creative outcome.”

“That mix of detail and artistry is something that sometimes feels missing in the conversation around audio production – often people seem to think you have to choose one at the expense of the other. My approach is more holistic – it’s finding the feeling inherent in sonic detail and choosing tools that allow me to bring it forward in the most musically appropriate way possible.”

Sterling’s holistic approach has informed how he has outfitted Precision Sound as a studio space. A thoroughly contemporary audio production environment in terms of acoustics and technical integration, the studio is filled with a curated mix of modern and classic recording equipment in line with his exacting standards. “We’re living in a golden age where the tools and techniques of recording permit tremendous creativity and options” he explains. In my case, I have a very intentional approach when capturing instrumental sources in my work, and I have a  substantial relationship with Schoeps microphones.”

Painting evocative sonic pictures
Sterling regularly utilizes several Schoeps microphones including an MSTC 64 ORTF Stereo Microphone, as well as Colette series modular microphones with MK 2 omni capsules, MK 22 open cardioid capsules, or MK 41 super cardioid capsules depending on the use case. Although each excels in different applications, he notes that they all possess the crucial mix of detail and sonic tangibility required for his work. “I’m very focused on capturing detail and a perception of high resolution in my work – I want things to sound 3D, present, and leap out of the speakers,”. “Some microphones can capture great detail but they are clinical and uninspiring sounding, or in other cases microphones may have a lot of character but lack the clarity that helps you feel in the space with the instrument. There is a ‘fog’ over the sound and you can’t really ‘feel it’ in a physical sense.”

“Schoeps microphones on the whole strike an incredible balance where they have clarity and fidelity while still having a euphonic character that other microphones might not match” he continues. “There’s a smoothness and musicality to them that flatter the details of a source and the physical space around it without masking or a diminishment of resolution. The mix of spatial information along with the emotional detail to the way instruments and performances are captured is what helps put a listener in the right perceptual space when listening to a recording. It enhances the pleasure of listening when you have detail with feeling.”

Equating each Schoeps microphone as a different ‘brush’ in his artistic toolbox – the MSTC for ensemble and ambient recordings, the MK 41 for dialogue and woodwinds, the MK 22s for up-close string instruments and the MK 2s for nearly everything else – Sterling describes this part of the process in purely artistic terms. “When you’re trying to paint a picture with sound, you want to capture a sensation that is incredibly vivid and emotionally evocative,” he explains. “Schoeps has paid attention to preserving ambiance cues and clarity of capture in their microphone designs, and they present the realities of the physical space in a way you can feel as well as hear.”

“The microphones give me an incredible amount of information that lets me have great fidelity of capture and maintain the intimacy and 3D presence of the source as needed for my work.”

Whether working on a high level commercial project or alongside songwriters and artists, Sterling says that the goal is always the same – “Use the best tools you have available for the job, work efficiently, get the technology out of the way of the creativity, and deliver superior work in everything you do!“

Although he’s constantly looking for new tools and methods in service of his clients, his trusted favorites remain close at hand. “So much of what has built this studio has been a willingness to approach each project with passion for the unique process it requires,” he says. “...having the drive to explore and uncover the sonic presentation that will make each project special is important to me.”

“Schoeps microphones help me capture and preserve the emotional detail in the performance, and that makes for a very happy engineer and artist.”
